Wild — Harbour — City
Soundscape
2020
Three sound clips illustrate the essence of three distinct locations: the wild, the harbor, and the city. Each clip features the same melody but is set against different ambiances. This progression reflects the journey of social development, starting from a pre-industrial society (wild), moving through the Industrial Revolution (harbor), and culminating in urbanization (city).
Wild
Everything on the planet begins in a state of wilderness. Even after millions of years, the wilderness endures. The basic melody represents the purity of wildlife. An echo effect is applied to the piano track to enhance the earthy sensation.
Harbour
Exploration began from harbors. Chords were added to the basic melody and harp track to enhance the watery ambiance. The sounds of small planes flying overhead and boats whistling contrast with the whooshing sea and singing birds, illustrating the process of industrialization.
City
Cello and violin tracks were added to the piano and harp melody to illustrate the modernization of society in contrast with the ambient sounds. Echo and flanger effects were applied to the piano track to enhance the layering of the entire scene.
